Last week, members of the St. Ambrose community, along with the state of Iowa, put down the TV remote, got off the couch, and decided to be more active. This was all a part of a relatively new initiative by the state of Iowa attempting to get more people in Iowa active.
The Iowa Healthiest State Walk is a short, one kilometer walk, which is just over half a mile. The goal of this event is not to get the community in great shape right away. It’s to try to get people out to do something to get active. Almost everyone can walk for half a mile, so this is a good way to encourage people who do not normally exercise in any way to get active.
St. Ambrose offered two separate walks on October 9 for members of the St. Ambrose community. The walkers met up before the walk so that they had other people to walk with. The participants were in a group for the duration of the walk. St. Ambrose Wellness Coordinator Leanne Kulchawik explains why this is such an important event.
“I think it’s important not only for the state of Iowa to get to that healthiest state but also for the people of the university to get out and walk together and talk about why it’s important,” Kulchawik said.
This event was held on the same day all across Iowa. After the event was over, each place that held this walk tallied up the number of participants. Then, after the event is over, the number of walkers in all of Iowa is added up to see how many people participated.
There was an improvement on the number of participants in the state from last year. In the second year that St. Ambrose has participated in this initiative, they had a total of 90 people participate in this event. This is an improvement over last year’s total of 52.
There were nearly 300,000 people who participated in the state of Iowa, which was an improvement over last year’s total.
With the number of participants growing, this seems to be an initiative on the rise. With Iowa’s goal of being the healthiest state by 2016, there is a good chance that this event will be back on campus next year. As for those people who did participate this year, Kulchawik hopes that this will encourage them to become active more often.
