The St. Ambrose dance team has continued their success coming off of a national championship last year and now have a chance to bring home a second consecutive title. The team traveled to Missouri Valley College on Feb. 3-4 to the NAIA Regional Qualifier where they took home their third straight Large Dance Regional Championship and many other honors at the event.
Junior dance team member Heather Sturtz believes that the team put on their best performance of the year.
“We all felt very good and knew we left it all out on the floor and it was all up to the judges at that point,” said Sturtz, a Regional All-American on last year’s national championship team.
The weekend only brought more success for the team as they captured another championship in the Hip Hop category and received runner-up in the Small Varsity dance category. Junior Miranda McKenna also was name a NDA All-American.
The dance team is trying to repeat as NAIA National Champions, however the team this year is quite different in terms of the makeup of the team. Almost half of the team is new to the college nationals scene according to Sturtz.
“This year our team is very different, we only have 9 girls that danced on the nationals floor last year on the team and 8 new girls,” continued Sturtz. “We are incorporating each dancers unique talents to the fullest which has created a very edgy and innovative routine.”
The dance team will be heading to compete in Daytona Beach, Fla. to defend their Large Varsity national title and also compete in the Hip Hop category where they placed fifth last year.
