Queen Bees MCC Champs

The St. Ambrose Queen Bee basketball team had high hopes for this season, and those hopes have become reality as the Bees ended there regular season and conference play strong. The Queen Bees clinched a share of the Midwest  Collegiate Conference Title after Mt. Mercy defeated  Iowa Wesleyan 73-69 and the Bees defeated Viterbo 66-44. Junior Annie Smith had a team-high 19 points, providing a much-needed spark off the bench and Senior Ali Dolphin had 17 points and 12 rebounds to power the Bee’s past the V-Hawks.
On Feb. 19 St. Ambrose faced off  against number 11 Iowa Wesleyan in a tough battle. From the start the Bees were lead by Ali Dolphin with 21 points, 14 rebounds, four assist, two steals and two blocks. St. Ambrose powered past the Tigers with a 51-42 win.
Mollie Yeargle and Megan Cash both had 11 points to help the Bees secure the outright conference title.
During the Queen Bees’ hot streak Dolphin was named MCC Player of the Week for the third time this season. She had previously received this honor on Nov. 15 and 22. Dolphin has averaged a team high of 15.1 points and 9.8 rebounds.
St. Ambrose clinched home court advantage in the MCC tournament with their outstanding record of 25-4. The road to the tournament championship would go through Davenport, Iowa. This proved to be pivotal to the Bees’ success throughout conference tournament play.
In the first conference tournament game the Bees would face off against a familiar foe, Waldorf  College. The Queen Bees would prove to be too strong for Waldorf, defeating them 66-41. Sam Saladino came off the bench and scored eight points. Megan Storjohann  and Shelly Charvat each had 10 points, helping the Queen Bees to victory in the MCC quarterfinal game.
In a conference semifinal showdown, St. Ambrose would face Iowa Wesleyan once again. Ali Dolphin had a team-high of 28 points and six steals while Mollie Yeargle had 13 points. The Bees would defeat Wesleyan by 10 points 82-72 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Semifinal. The win boosted St. Ambrose to 27-4 on the year and earned them a spot in the MCC tournament final.
On Feb. 28 the Queen Bees matched up against William Penn in the MCC tournament championship game. St. Ambrose fought hard and played well from start to finish. To no one’s surprise, senior leader Dolphin had a team-high of 21 points,18 of them coming in the second half when the Bees needed them the most. Ashley Dexter scored 19 points of her own and Shelly Charvat came off the bench and scored 17 points. It was truly a team victory as the Bees defeated William Penn 79-72. This win ensured the Bees a spot in the 32 team NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships.This win against William Penn  gave the Bees their first undefeated season at home since 1999. Now the St. Ambrose Queen Bee basketball team takes their talents to Sioux City, IA, to compete for the prestigious national title.
